What's in a (domain) name
The first idea for the name was Linkbear 🐻.
Rather accidentally I thought of Linkbar and I liked that it was shorter and was still a good name. Also, it’s fitting that Linkbar serves links.
linkbar.com was for sale for ~$6,500 and I was just not ready to spend that much cash.
linkbar.co was available so I snapped it up for the main domain name. Naturally, I wanted linkb.ar for serving short links. Unfortunately, registering the Argentinian ccTLD turned out to be far from simple. Even though the claims that it’s open for registration by anyone. After waiting for the domain to activate for a couple of days, EuroDNS sent me an email saying the registry required “additional information”, because they considered the domain “special”.
Along linkb.ar I wanted another, shorter domain for serving links. pgo.to was the last available 3-letter domain in the [a-z]go.to
set so I just had to get it.
